Misbaah is in sixth grade and attends a Pratham Support Class. She attends regularly, and likes all of the subjects, but enjoys Urdu the most. This is her first year in a Pratham Class, and her favorite part is the when the teacher tells the class stories, because her other teachers never read her stories. She has two brothers and three sisters, all of whom also attend school, and her mother works around the house, often enlisting Misbaah’s help with daily tasks. Her father works in a hospital, and Misbaah wants to be a doctor when she grows up.

Taslima loves the sixth grade, and especially her teacher from the Pratham support class. She always struggled in English, but her new teacher never scolds her when she makes mistakes. Instead, she speaks to her softly and works with her until she understands. Every day, her teacher puts new words on the board, and Taslima works very hard to learn them. She loves coming back to class to learn more English, and enjoys Hindi as well. When she is older, she wants to be a teacher just like her own, and can only hope that she will be as helpful and inspiring as her special teacher.

Haseena is twelve-years-old and is in sixth grade. Her favorite subject is Urdu, but she struggles in math. She says the Pratham class really helps her though. She loves the stories that her teacher tells – her favorite part of class. She likes to relay the stories she hears in class to her three younger brothers. She enjoys telling the stories so much that she has decided that she wants to be a teacher when she is older, just like her own.

He wants to become a doctor when he grows up. Mohmmad is small for his age, and the older children love looking after him.

Unlike many of them, he has a strange ambition- he wants to become a bodyguard! Aziz is enrolled in Pratham’s Library Program, where he is encouraged to pick up whichever books he wants to read. Though he hasn’t yet learnt to read, he loves having books read out to him, and looks at the pictures when there is nobody to read the stories out.

Her favorite story is the fable of the lion and the mouse, which she reads in his native Urdu. Inspired by her teachers at the Pratham program, Muskan wants to become a teacher.

Saajiya realizes the value of a good education

Nine year old Saajiya lives in a slum community in Mumbai, and studies in grade 5 at a local school. She is the third of six children – five sisters and a brother- and her father is a tailor. Saajiya’s family realizes the importance of a good education, and she and four of her siblings are enrolled in the Read India Library Program, which makes learning fun. Saajiya’s encouraged to pick up and read whatever book she wants, and the book she keeps returning to is one called “Ek Tha Accha, Ek Tha Baccha”. While Saajiya loves reading, her favorite subject is Maths, and the teacher at the Read India class often clears her doubts for her.
