Seven year old Nazia lives in a slum community in Mumbai, and studies in grade 3 at a local school. She is the fourth of six children – five sisters and a brother- and her father is a tailor. Nazia’s family realizes the importance of a good education, and are determined to ensure that all their daughters go to school. Nazia, along with four of her siblings is enrolled in the Read India Library Program, where she is encouraged to pick up and read books on her own. Her favorite story is the fable of the monkey and its hat, and she never tires of reading it. Till recently, she used to look at the pictures and guess the story, but now she has started reading it in Urdu. Nazia’s learnt a lot from the Program.

Shekhar wants to become a police officer

Nine year old Shekhar lives in a slum community in Mumbai, and studies in grade 5 at a local school. When he grows up, he wants to become a police officer. Shekhar loves attending the Read India Library Program, where he is encouraged to pick up whichever books he wants to read. Not only have his reading skills improved, he has developed a love for books and reading. His favorite story is the fable of the crow and the tall glass.

Five year old Saadiya lives in a slum community in Mumbai, and studies in kindergarten at a local school. She has three brothers and a sister, and has recently enrolled in Pratham’s Library Program. Though she hasn’t yet learnt to read, she loves seeing the pictures in the story books. Soon, she will start reading the stories herself. Saadiya loves reciting poems, her favorite being “chubby cheeks”. She wants to become a doctor when she grows up.

Sameer loves reading the story of the lion and the mouse

Eight year old Sameer Shabir lives in a slum community in Mumbai, and studies in grade 3 at a local school. He used to attend school regularly, but wasn’t learning too much in school. His parents put him in the Read India Library Program being conducted in a room in his community, after which there has been a sea change in his attitude towards books and learning. Sameer is encouraged to pick up and read books from the library, and Sameer reads his favouite book on teh fable of the lion and the mouse at least once every day. When he is reading, nothing can distract him, and he is quick to ask questions when he doesn’t understand something. Sameer says that his favorite subject is Maths.

Not only have his reading skills improved, he has developed a love for books and reading. He still watches a fair bit of TV, and his favorite cartoon character is Chota Bheem. His favorite subject is English.

Five year old Afiyaan lives in a slum community in Mumbai, and studies in kindergarten at a local school. His family is determined to give him a good education, which is why they have enrolled him in Read India Library Program. Afiyaan doesn’t know his letters, but that doesn’t stop him from reading. There are many picture books in the Library, and he loves browsing through them, and making up his own stories as he goes along. His teacher is confident that in just a short time, he will graduate to more advanced books.

Nameera loves reading, and teaching others to read

Thirteen year old Nameera lives in a slum community in Mumbai, and studies in grade 8 at a local school. She has two brothers, and is often required to baby sit the younger one. Nameera comes from a fairly conservative family, but her parents are determined to give her a good education, which is why they send her to the Read India Library Program. Nameera is a studious child, and nothing can distract her when she is reading a book. She is also the class monitor, and part of her responsibilities involve helping the younger children with their reading- a duty that she enjoys performing. Nameera loves English, specially English literature, and she wants to become a doctor when she grows up.

Twelve year old Nazia lives in a slum community in Mumbai, and studies in grade 7 at a local school. Though she comes from a fairly conservative Muslim family, Nazia’s parents are determined to give her a good education, which is why they send her to the Read India Library Program. Nazia is a studious child, who wants to become a doctor when she grows up. Before Pratham started the Library Program in her community, Nazia did not know who to go to for getting her doubts cleared, but now she has the Pratham teacher to help her. Nazia loves reading Urdu books, and has now become fluent in the languge.
