Reading like a fourth grader

Sanjana
Nine year old Sanjana is in fourth grade in a government school in Mumbai. She lives with her parents near Dhobi Ghat, a low-income neighborhood in Mumbai. Sanjana’s father is a painter and her mother is a housewife.

When Pratham conducted a learning camp in her neighborhood a year ago to test students for proficiency in various subjects, the tests revealed that Sanjana could not read words. This led her father to enroll her in the Pratham Summer Camp in her neighborhood.

Today, Sanjana reads with hesitation but can comprehend an entire story. Over the course of the year, Sanjana has learned to read and write effectively with the help of Pratham’s special teaching techniques and her Pratham-trained teacher.

In math, Sanjana has also improved dramatically. When she started the camp, she could add and subtract, and now she can perform simple two digit multiplication.

Sanjana loves to attend school and the learning camp as she says that her classes are fun and interesting. Her teachers say that she is an extremely bright child who is focused and dedicated, curious and eager to learn. Sanjana also loves to play games. In her spare time, she likes to play hopscotch and listen to music. Sanjana wants to be a doctor when she grows up.

Thank you all for giving someone like Sanjana a quality education through Pratham!
