Grandfather’s support …

13 year old Shabnam studies in a Government school in Grade seven in Allahnagar, Gujarat. She has two brothers and one sister who all live together with their grandfather. Her grandfather is a lorry driver by profession and is extremely supportive of her studies and is paying her school fees.

When Pratham conducted a learning camp in her neighborhood a year ago and tested all the students in that area for proficiency in various subjects, the tests revealed that Shabnam was not at her grade level in language and math. This led her grandfather to enroll her in a Pratham Learning Center which was located near their home. Over the course of the year, Shabnam has learned to read and write with the help of Pratham’s special teaching techniques, as well as the care and attention from her Pratham-trained teacher, at the Center.

Shabnam is also enrolled in a computer training course in the Pratham Center, because these additional skills will help her build a secure future for herself. Shabnam loves attending the Center as well as her school, as learning is now fun and interesting and she feels confident when she goes to school.

Her grandfather is very happy with the progress that Shabnam has made at the Center. He feels that the Center has not only helped in dramatically improving her language and math levels, but has also piqued her curiosity in other subjects.
